Dice and Rolls
Most actions in D&D use a 20-sided die (d20).
The Basic d20 Roll
- Roll 1d20.
- Add the ability modifier the GM names (from your six abilities).
- If you are proficient, add your proficiency bonus once.
- Meet or beat the target number to succeed.
Example: To sneak past a guard, roll 1d20, add your Dexterity modifier, and if you're proficient in Stealth, add your proficiency bonus too.
Advantage and Disadvantage
- Advantage: roll 2d20, take the higher result.
- Disadvantage: roll 2d20, take the lower result.
If you have both at once, they cancel out and you roll normally.
Three Common Roll Types
- Ability check: Try a task, compare to a Difficulty Class (DC) set by the GM.
- Saving throw: Avoid harm, like dodging a fireball or resisting poison.
- Attack roll: Try to hit a creature's Armor Class (AC).
Passive Scores
Your passive score is 10 + your modifiers. The GM uses it for things you're always doing, like staying alert.
