The roll you make to determine whether an attack hits an enemy at all.

Spell attack roll

Some spells require the caster to make a spell attack roll to determine whether the spell effect hits the intended target.

If an attack roll is required for a spell, this will be indicated in the spell's description as making either a ranged spell attack or a melee spell attack, otherwise the spell automatically hits.
