Ability Check

The roll a character or monster makes when attempting anything other than an attack that has a chance of failure.

When the outcome of an action is uncertain, the GM might call for an ability check. The player rolls a d20 and adds the relevant ability modifier and any bonuses or penalties from other sources.

The result must meet or exceed a target number, which is usually set by the GM. The target number is often called a difficulty class (DC).
